Bacteriophages as a solution to bacterial antibiotic resistance

Project: Research

Project Details

Project Description

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major health challenge. My research addresses AMR using bacteriophages, viruses that kill bacteria. We developed Entelli-02, a frontline phage product for hospital-associated infections caused by difficult-to-treat bacteria. Currently used compassionately at Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, Entelli-02 is the first validated bacteriophage product, offering effective and timely treatment for Enterobacter infections and advancing phage therapy in clinical practice.

With this grant, I aim to strengthen my collaboration with Prof. Laurent Debarbieux at the Pasteur Institute to advance our understanding of bacteriophages through experimental and modelling approaches and to establish Entelli-02, Australia’s first bacteriophage product, as a leading antimicrobial solution for Enterobacter infections. This collaboration provides a unique opportunity to drive innovation, solidify Australia’s leadership in combating antimicrobial resistance, and expand the international adoption of Entelli-02.
