Autophagy and the nucleus

Project: Research

Project Description

Cells degrade parts of their internal structure by processes called autophagy (''''self eating''''). We have developed a biosensor based upon fluorescent proteins that is able to report on the degradation of cellular proteins or sub-structures. Using our fluorescent reporter we can detect the degradation of portions of the nucleus in yeast cells. The nucleus contains the genetic information (DNA) and acts as the master control centre of the cell. Our study is aimed at gaining new information on this nuclear degradation process in yeast cells. We will investigate whether the process occurs in higher (mammalian) cells and therefore may influence the outcome of human diseases that involve nuclear dysfunction.
