Project Description

This contract project will assess the spreading, stickiness and persistence of a signature fungicidecompound at two concentrations in a base solution, against compounds with similar and different functional groups and comparative properties.
Spreadability
Spreadability will be assessed by the spread of a droplet of known volume on a glass microscope slide, on a horizontally flat surface. After a period of 5 minutes, the size of the droplet spread will be quantified using image analysis software that is freely available online. Spreadability will also be tested on a carnauba wax coated microscope slide to mimic the waxy surface of a leaf. The coating will be applied in a replicable manner. Droplet spread of each testing solution, on each surface texture will be repeated five times. With five testing solutions at two concentrations, two surface textures and five replicates of each, 100 individual tests will be conducted.
Stickiness
Stickiness will be assessed by contact angle hysteresis. A droplet of a known volume of testing solution will be applied to a microscope slide, which will then be tilted. The advancing and receding contact angles of the droplet will be measured, until a critical roll off angle is achieved. This will be repeated on a carnauba wax coated slide. Quantification of the critical roll off angle for each testing solution on each surface texture will be repeated five times. With five testing solutions at two concentrations, two surface textures and five replicates of each, 100 individual tests will be conducted.
Persistence
Persistence will be measured by adding a droplet of known volume of the testing solution to a glass microscope slide and then allowed to dry. The mass of the slide will then be determined. The slide will then be fixed at an 80° angle and water as droplets of a known volume applied to the top of the slide. The slide will then be allowed to dry and the mass difference determined. This will then be repeated on a paraffin wax coated slide. Quantification of the residual testing solution on each surface texture will be repeated five times. With five testing solutions at two concentrations, two surface textures and five replicates of each, 100 individual tests will be conducted.

In the final report, all methods, consumables, equipment, and/or software used for analysis (such as image analysis, if applicable), will be detailed to satisfy the requirements for inclusion in the patent application. All data will be analysed using appropriate statistical models to allow comparisons between the testing solutions to be made. The methods used for statistical analysis will be defined in the final report.
