Project Description

Crashes at rail level crossings continue to impact the safety and efficiency of the road and rail networks across Australia. Current countermeasures such as overpasses are extremely costly and thus have limited application. State and national authorities are demanding change. Through the use of novel human factors techniques to model level crossing system constraints and performance, this research will lead to the development and evaluation of innovative countermeasures that will improve the safety of the rail level crossing system. Reductions in the levels of significant trauma at level crossings, and new public policy for level crossing upgrades, are the intended real-world outcomes.
