Over the last hundred years, Anzac Day has captured the national imagination, replenishing and mythologizing our memory of war. This project will chart its origins, development and much contested meanings. It will be both an historical study, tracing changes in commemoration over time and an investigation of how Australians mark Anzac Day today, interrogating the making of historical sensibility and exploring the complex connections between personal and collective memory. We will examine the Day's shared origins/observance with NZ and the changing role it has played shaping national identity abroad. Outcomes will include publications, three PhD theses, public forums, exhibitions and a website charting the many ways Anzac is remembered.
