Project Description
MUARC has undertaken a series of analysis that has examined the characteristics of crashes and safety performance of Transurban assets in Victoria, Queensland (QLD) and New South (NSW) compared to ‘Like’ roads. To date, analysis has been undertaken on crashes that occurred in the 2012 – 2017 period1, the 2017 – 2018 period, 2 and across the 2012-2022 period.3 Additional analysis of the safety performance of the Warrego Highway and the Toowoomba Bypass in Queensland was also conducted.4
Consistent to these reports was that the safety performance of Transurban assets with respect to the number of crashes and their severity is superior to that of ‘like roads’, adjusted for VKT.
This proposal outlines a program of work to conduct an updated analysis of the ‘series 3’ report that examined crash rates over the period 2012 – 2020. In addition to expanding the crash rate analysis to include the years 2021 and 2022 (to the extent possible), the analysis will provide an expanded analysis of crash rates by each road across the period and key crash type characteristics.
