Effective management of natural and cultural resources for sustainability is a national research priority. This is only possible if the concept of land ownership aligns with principles of sustainable development. The Australian concept of land ownership does not impose environmental or social obligations on landowners to care for natural and cultural resources. This project will be the first to investigate legal and theoretical barriers to the embedding of environmental and social obligations within land ownership and to develop legal and policy framework for regulation of land ownership that embeds principles for sustaining natural and cultural resources.
