Project Description

The psychological concept of Situation Awareness (SA) has made a noted contribution to safety in many domains such as aviation and the military; however, it remains ambiguous within road transport. This project will develop, via on-road studies, a first of its kind systems-based model of SA for road transport which will inform the development of road system design solutions to enhance the awareness of different road users (e.g. drivers, motorcyclists, bicyclists, pedestrians). These will then be tested empirically using advanced simulation. The outputs of the project will be a novel, systems-based model of SA for road transport and a series of empirically tested design recommendations for enhancing SA amongst different road users.
