A randomized controlled trial of Theta Burst Stimulation for the treatment of cognitive impairment in mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) results in considerable impairment and suffering for a large number of Australians and their families. The development of novel and effective treatment approaches is a critical priority. The current study investigates an innovative treatment approach for AD, namely Theta Burst Stimulation (TBS). TBS is a form brain stimulation shown to significantly enhance brain function and subsequently cognition. We are currently conducting the first ever clinical trial of TBS in patients with AD,examining its effectiveness in enhancing cognition, improving every day functioning and slowing illness progression. The current proposal is to extend this promising pilot study.
