The history of Taiwan is fiercely 'contested.' This project will write a history of the island focussing on the six separate colonial regimes that ruled the island from the first arrival of non-indigenous peoples in 1624 until the democratisation beginning in 1988. The history will examine the nature of the colonial regimes, patterns of ethnicity and inter-ethnic relations, the development of the island's economy, social structures over time, the roles of religion and education, and the concepts of place and identity among Taiwanese. To date, very few comprehensive histories of Taiwan have been written in English.
