This project provides the first extensive study of the figure of Googoosh (born Faegheh Atashin, 1950), Iran's all-time most celebrated pop star. It analyses her music, the significance ascribed to her by generations of listeners and the historical conditions that have shaped her career and reception. Googoosh emerged as a child star in the 1950s, reigned as queen of pop in the 1970s, became an idealised, silenced voice in the 1980s and remains Iran's nostalgic favourite in the 21st century. Through musical analysis, archival research and ethnography, this project contributes an original history of popular music and related sociocultural change in Iran and its diaspora.
