Project Description

This project seeks to write a history of Queensland art from 1992 until 2016. This was the period when Queensland art "comes of age" with the Asia-Pacific Triennials and the national prominence of such artists as Gordon Bennett, Tracey Moffatt, Richard Bell and Scott Redford. This study will draw on my long practice as an art critic and reviewer of the art of this period, including periods spent as the art reviewer for the Courier-Mail newspaper (1995-2005), ABC Radio National (1998-2003) and Artforum (2007-present).This study will relate the art of the present to previous Queensland art, drawing on such exhibitions and surveys as Vida Lahey's Art in Queensland 1859-1959, Nancy Underhill's Queensland Works 1950-1985 and Ursula Szulakowska's Experimental Art in Queensland 1975-1995.
