Description

Professor J. Michael (Mike) Cullen held the Chair of Zoology at Monash University from 1976 until 1992. Professor
Cullen was known for his outstanding contributions to the development of ethology and ornithology. In Australia
his most conspicuous contributions was his push to apply scientific research to the management of Little Penguins
at the St Kilda breakwater and Philip Island. Professor Cullen died in a car accident on his way to Monash
University in 2001.
In 2012, the School of Biological Sciences established the Mike Cullen Award, to be awarded to a Postdoc in the School
of Biological Sciences for the most outstanding publication within the period 2023-2024. The successful applicant will
receive an award of $5000, which they can use to support their research program, while affiliated with the School of
Biological Sciences at Monash.
