Focusing on building relationships with school communities to enhance teachers’ mathematical learning experiences, Dr Sharyn Livy and Dr Ann Downton outlined how they have contributed to the development of pre-service teachers by providing opportunities to extend their teacher identity and readiness for mathematics teaching. By partnering with pre-service teachers, co-teachers (primary mathematics school leaders) and their primary school students, Sharyn and Ann facilitated the creation of a safe space in which pre-service teachers were able to extend their knowledge for teaching primary mathematics. Throughout their application, Sharyn and Ann demonstrated a positive engagement with the profession and presented numeracy in context. Their work was acknowledged by an award panel member as a ‘wonderful way of preparing pre-service teachers’.
