Neurogenesis is a fundamental process of generating new neurons, which integrate into existing circuits.
Neurogenesis is important for learning and memory, ageing and neurodegenerative disorders. Both intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms regulate neurogenesis. miRNAs are short noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level that appears to be involved in multiple steps of neurogenesis. However, it is not clear how these miRNAs are modulated during neurogenesis. This proposal broadly aims to identify promoters of miRNAs, such as mir9, that mediate pathways specifically regulated neurogenesis.
