Biography

Zelia is a doctor at Alfred Health, home to 14 state-wide services, including the state emergency and trauma centre.

As a doctor interested in both oncological and ophthalmic surgery, Zelia has been involved in research in both areas. Her research has been published in top medical journals, and has been presented in Europe, USA and Australia.

As a medical student, Zelia refined her business, leadership and strategic skills as sponsorship director of a major conference for Australian Medical Students' Association (3000+ members), leading her team to raise a six-figure sum. She served as the treasurer of the Monash medical students' society (1200+ members), managing its six-figure yearly turnover and advising its hundred yearly events. Zelia subsequently led the re-development of a student society, resulting in a 120% increase in online engagement, 200% increase in sales/sponsorship and 260% increase in event attendance, over a single year.

As a result of her advisory and strategic skills, Zelia has had the privilege of running and advising small businesses in the education (UMAT Ease), logistics (ICA Deliveries Pty Ltd) and engineering (Engineered Safety by Analysis) sectors. She has also been invited to participate in Bain & Company and McKinsey & Company leadership programs.

Zelia is particularly interested in the intersection between technology/entrepreneurship and healthcare. She has been involved in research combining engineering technology with orthopaedic surgery, as well as working with a health technology team in its early stages.

Outside of work, Zelia enjoys travelling, politics and public speaking. She has won multiple public speaking awards from presenting both her research and entrepreneurial ideas.
