Biography

Dr. Shee Yu Gang received his B.Eng. (Hons) in Electronics-Telecommunications Engineering and M.Eng. from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai, in 2003 and 2005, respectively. During his master’s studies, he was awarded the prestigious National Science Fellowship (NSF) by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI), Malaysia. He began his academic career as a lecturer at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) in November 2005.

In 2006, Dr. Shee was awarded a second NSF to pursue his Ph.D. at Universiti Putra Malaysia under the mentorship of Professor Dr. Mohd Adzir Mahdi. As part of his doctoral program, he completed a three-month research attachment in 2008 with the Optical Networking Research Group at the Georgia Institute of Technology, led by Professor Dr. Gee-Kung Chang. His academic excellence was recognized in November 2008 when he was named Best Presenter at the 5th Annual Seminar of NSF Research Scholars. He earned his Ph.D. in May 2011 and rejoined UTAR as an Assistant Professor.

Dr. Shee academic tenure includes appointments at UTAR (2005–2012, 2016–present) and the University of Malaya (2012–2015). Over the course of his career, he has led or contributed to 17 research projects and supervised numerous postgraduate students. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications in journals and conferences, with research interests in nonlinear optics, radio-over-fiber communication systems, microwave photonic filters, and photonic sensors.

Beyond academia, Dr. Shee is actively involved with the industry, delivering technical training programs in fiber optic installations and data communications. His training expertise spans outside plant (OSP), inside plant (ISP), and transmission systems, tailored for both technicians and researchers. He is a PSMB Certified Trainer, a Chartered Engineer registered with the UK Engineering Council, a Professional Engineer under the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), and a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). He also holds Senior Member status with both the IEEE and OPTICA.

A strong advocate for academia–industry collaboration, Dr. Shee has significantly enhanced student learning and institutional engagement. One of his notable accomplishments was the establishment of the UM-Huawei Learning Academy at the University of Malaya in 2013, which provided students with direct access to cutting-edge industry technologies and practical training. Building on this momentum, he collaborated with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in 2014 to organize the "UM-MCMC Internet of Things (IoT) Conference." The event drew over 1,000 participants, including major industry stakeholders, fostering dialogue on emerging technologies and reinforcing the university’s role as a hub for innovation.

In 2024, Dr. Shee further expanded his outreach by organizing the landmark event "Beyond Boundaries: Connecting Worlds in Space" at UTAR. Featuring keynote addresses by NASA scientists, the event attracted over 400 attendees, including students, faculty, and external participants. This initiative showcased the university’s capability to engage global thought leaders and fostered a vibrant culture of curiosity and innovation. By facilitating direct interaction with pioneers in space exploration, Dr. Yu advanced interdisciplinary learning and positioned the university as a platform for visionary dialogue and collaboration.

Internationally, Dr. Shee has forged strategic partnerships with leading institutions in China, including Southeast University, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Xidian University, and East China Jiaotong University. These efforts have led to the formation of two joint research institutes, fostering collaborative research and academic exchange. He served as the Deputy Director of the Xidian–UTAR Institute of Science, Technology and Innovation.

On 6 May 2025, Dr. Shee was appointed Director of the Research Excellence Unit at Monash University Malaysia, where he continues to drive research innovation, strategic collaboration, and academic leadership.
