Personal profile

Biography

I am presently serving as an Associate Professor at Monash University, adjunct Professor at University Malaya and extend my expertise as a Consultant and Addiction Psychiatrist at KPJ Puteri Johor and at The Mind Faculty KL. My previous academic and clinical roles were enriched by my tenure as an Associate Professor and Clinical Psychiatrist at the University of Malaya, where I was deeply involved in research initiatives at the University Malaya Center of Addiction Science (UMCAS) and led the Nicotine Addiction Research Group (NARCC) as its coordinator.

My commitment to societal well-being is demonstrated through my roles beyond the academic sphere, including serving as the Honorary Secretary of the Addiction Medicine Association of Malaysia (AMAM), Treasurer for the Care Warriors Association, and a member of the Advisory Board for the Malaysian Drug Policy Reform Program (MDPR), an initiative of the Malaysia Aids Foundation (MAF).

My clinical practice emphasizes men's health within the context of addiction treatment, acknowledging the high prevalence of issues such as smoking, alcohol, and illicit drug use among men. My professional pursuits are primarily focused on addiction and dual diagnosis, with a notable achievement in 2015 when my team was awarded a competitive grant to improve smoking cessation interventions. Today, we are recognized as national leaders in this domain, having developed a mobile application specifically designed for the Malaysian context.

Additionally, I contribute as a Technical and Expert Advisor to the Malaysia Ministry of Health, aiding in the development and implementation of the National Clinical Practice Guidelines for Tobacco Use Disorder, the mQuit Service Project, the Technical Working Group on Evidence-based Smoking Cessation, and policies promoting tobacco-free university campuses.

In research, I have been awarded grants for various projects, including studies on sexual function among methadone-assisted-treatment ex-opioid users and the impact of smoking and electronic cigarettes on cellular, biochemical, and genetic profiles. I also play a key role as a sub-principal investigator in an external grant project aimed at developing an online intervention to reduce sexual risk and drug use-related harms among stimulant-using men who have sex with men (MSM) in Malaysia.

With over 100 academic publications in both local and international journals and an H-index of 20, my contributions to the field of addiction psychiatry are well-recognized. I am frequently invited as a speaker at numerous local and international conferences, sharing my expertise and insights gained from a career dedicated to advancing addiction medicine and psychiatry.
