Personal profile

Biography

Dr. Wong Siew Fang, commonly known as Dr. Thomas, commenced his appointment as a research fellow at Monash University Malaysia in August 2023. He possesses a strong academic foundation, having earned a B.Sc. degree with First Class Honours in Resource Chemistry from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), followed by an M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Malaya (UM), respectively.

During his M.Sc. studies, under the guidance of Associate Professor Dr. Ng Eng Poh, Dr. Wong focused on the synthesis mechanisms and catalytic properties of nanoporous zeolite materials. He also gained valuable international research exposure through a three-month attachment at Suranaree University of Technology in Thailand, working in collaboration with Associate Professor Dr. Jatuporn Wittayakun.

For his Ph.D., supervised by Associate Professor Dr. Khor Sook Mei, Dr. Wong carried out pioneering work in developing differential-based optical biosensor arrays for the detection, discrimination, and quantification of carcinogenic food contaminants in real food matrices. His research interests span Analytical Chemistry, Bioanalytical Chemistry, Food Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, and Synthetic Organic Chemistry, with a particular focus on (bio)sensor array design and its multidisciplinary applications. In addition to his work on biosensors, his current research centers on the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of heterocyclic imidazonaphthyridine derivatives as potential antimicrobial and therapeutic agents.
