Dr Pierre Bradley MBChB FANZCA is the past Chair of Airway Management Special Interest Group (ANZCA/ASA/NZSA) and divides his time between his public work at The Alfred and private practice. He is a senior lecturer in the Department of Perioperative Medicine, Monash University and a British Journal of Anaesthesia article reviewer.

He chaired the development of the national Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Professional Standards PS61 Guidelines for management of evolving airway obstruction: Transition to the can’t intubate can’t oxygenate airway emergency, and associated background reports. He co-authored the ANZCA Airway Assessment resource and a chapter in the new edition of the Oxford textbook of Anaesthesia for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He peer-reviewed the airway components of the 2013 ANZCA Training Program and 2017 Updated Effective Management of Anaesthetic Crises.

His interests include Simulation Training and Education, Airway Management, Neurosurgery including complex spines and cerebral aneurysms, Vascular Surgery including Interventional Radiology, Endocrine surgery including neuroendocrine tumours such as phaeochromocytoma, Orthopaedics and Trauma, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in both the elective and emergency setting.

He is the Course Director of Advanced Airway Management Refresher Course and a founding member of NATCAT (National Airway Training for Anaesthetic Trainees). He has taught and lectured at national and international meetings on tips and techniques for videolaryngoscopes, fiberoptic and surgical airways, including the Inaugural World Airway Management Meeting in Dublin 2015 and the Royal College of Anesthesiologists of Thailand Annual Conference in Bangkok 2016. He has been on the steering committees for ANZCA Airway SIG Singapore Biannual meeting 2014 and the chair for MSD 2017 Networks in Anaesthesia and Surgery Meeting

He is one of the lead developers of a free iPhone App Topicalisation and sedation for awake fibreoptic intubation involving many experts from around Australia.

Originally from the UK, he completed his undergraduate training at the University of Dundee before commencing General Physician training with interests in Acute Medicine, Cardiology and Endocrinology. To compliment his acute medicine skills, he undertook further training in Emergency Medicine, Adult Flight Retrieval Medicine, Anaesthesia & Intensive Care, only to discover that Anaesthesia was more interesting for him. This gives him a firm understanding of the complexities of perioperative medicine and how it relates to the patient.

He is actively involved in teaching, with specific interests in Difficult Airway (Educator with the ANZCA Airway Special Interest Group) and Simulation use in Medical Education and manages the Risk Assessment portfolio at Epworth Healthcare for the Epworth Anaesthetic Advisory Committee.

He is an active participant in the “Continuing Professional Development Program” run by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and is the past Secretary of The Alfred Anaesthetic VMO Continuing Professional Development Group.

He lives in Melbourne with his wife and 4 children.
