Viviane is a Senior Lecturer and Co-Director of the Information Empowered Communities Lab in the Faculty of Information Technology. Her research focuses on the preservation of information and on recordkeeping as a tool to empower marginalised communities. Her DECRA Fellowship (2021-2024) is investigating the information access and information preservation needs and preferences of marginalised rural communities in Bangladesh with the aim to design a framework for culturally-sensitive and gender-sensitive information dissemination and information preservation and to support the communities to preserve their records and the information that is useful to them.

Viviane has multidisciplinary expertise in archival science, information science, Asian studies and community informatics. She received a PhD in Political Science from Monash University (2000) and an MA in Southeast Asian Studies from the University of Kent, UK (1991).  She also holds a Graduate Diploma in Information and Knowledge Management with specialisations in Archives and Recordkeeping and in Library and Information Science from Monash University (2015). Since 2015, she has occupied teaching and research positions in the Faculty of Information Technology, including as a Research Fellow on the PROTIC project, a community-informatics project in collaboration with Oxfam in Bangladesh, from September 2017 to March 2020.

Viviane is the author of 2 books, 2 monographs and 25 journal articles, most of them as single author. She has published in English and in French.

She has received several grants including:

• 2021-2023, Australian Research Council DECRA Research Fellowship: $547,601
• 2021, Whyte Fund Grant: $45,034 for the project "Investigation of the recordkeeping systems used by community-based organisations and youth organisations in Bangladesh” with Dr Khalid Hossain
• 2019, White Fund Grant: $13,500 for her project “Lost in translation: A comparative study of French and Australian archival theories and practices”.

Viviane was General Editor (Editor-in-Chief) of Archives and Manuscripts between January 2019 and January 2022 and guest editor of a special issue on “Scholarly and Professional Communication in Archives: Archival Traditions and Languages” with Emeritus Professor Eric Ketelaar (University of Amsterdam). She also guest-edited 2 special issues of Archival Science on “Archives in a Changing Climate” with Associate Professor Fiorella Foscarini (University of Toronto) and a special issue of the Gazette des archives on the Archives of Childhood.

Viviane’s research interests include archival theory; recordkeeping literacy; information culture; the impact of cultural and linguistic influences on the management and preservation of digital information; analogue and digital preservation and sustainable development, including documentation systems that help rural communities and disadvantaged communities to preserve information in formats that will meet their needs for the short and long terms.
