Biography

Dr Truong research aims to develop bioactive reagents and biomaterials scaffolds responsive to visible light for the prevention and treatment of complex diseases.
The admission of therapeutic drugs is the most common practice in the treatment of diseases, wound healing process, and relief of pain. However, the efficacy of pharmacotherapy is severely hindered by poor drug selectivity. Drug resistance is also a major problem in pharmacotherapy, particularly antibiotic resistance which has become a global threat to public health due to the rapid emergence of new resistant bacterial strains. Triggering the drug activity at the right time and place is the key to overcoming problems in poor drug selectivity, and will significantly improve the efficiency of modern pharmacotherapy.


Light is a non-invasive stimulus that can offer unprecedented spatial and temporal control over the activation of therapeutic properties. Dr Truong is building synthetic photo-switchable molecules to control biological activity of therapeutics for use in pharmacotherapy. He’s also utilising the photochemistry in the fabrication of light-responsive materials that can be applied in various applications, including 3D-bioprinting and biosensor.
