Biography

Dr. Venesser Fernandes is a Lecturer in Educational Leadership Studies in the School of Education, Culture and Society in the Faculty of Education, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. She currently teaches courses in the Master of Educational Leadership and Masters in Education as well as the Bachelor in Education programs offered through Monash Education. 

Her areas of teaching and research interest include Leadership and Organisational Development Studies; School Leadership; School Accountability and Improvement Systems, Data-Improved Decision-making Processes; Evidence-based School Improvement Systems, Change Management Systems; Quality Management Systems; Globalisation and Social Justice in Education; Using and Evaluating Research Evidence and, Educational Policy Analysis and Development.

Recently Venesser was involved in a research project in partnership with Independent Schools Victoria that looked at the agility and adaptability of 42 early-career, mid-career and experienced principals in Victoria over the COVID-19 pandemic. The study highlighted the importance of emotional intelligence in school leadership as schools move themselves from a crisis mode to adaptive and agile ways of improvement. This study's findings were timely and highlighted some important lessons and recommendations for principal preparation and development. A number of reports and articles are available in open access on this project with more underway.

In an earlier research project funded through the Dean’s Early Career Award, Dr Fernandes engaged in qualitative case-study research within Victorian schools investigating data-informed decision-making processes that were being used in Victoria across public, independent and Catholic school systems and focusing upon the leadership function of senior and middle-level school leaders who facilitate these processes. A number of articles and book chapters have been written up on this study and are available for further use. More articles are underway as well.

Dr. Fernandes works as an educational consultant with schools and school systems in Australia and overseas focusing on the evaluation and development of whole school continuous improvement systems through the use of data-informed decision-making and evidence use in practice.

Dr. Fernandes has been involved in the Principal Preparation Program that was run in partnership with Monash University, the Department of Education & Training, Victoria and Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership, Victoria. This program focused on the leadership development of aspiring principals within state schools across Victoria, Australia.

Dr. Fernandes has also worked as a School Reviewer for the Department of Education & Training schools in Victoria and actively researches in this space as well.

In her role as a Professional Experience Educator, Dr. Fernandes has worked closely with aspiring teachers at the undergraduate level. These efforts have been focused on developing their core understanding around teaching and learning and engaging them productively through their professional experience practicums within schools.
