Personal profile
Biography
I am a Professor of Data Science and Academic Director of the Ariel Liebman RACE for 2030 PhD program. As an information scientist working at the intersection of communications, information processing, and artificial intelligence, my research particularly focuses on Cyber‑Physical Systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, data analytics, and cyber security. The tools and methods I develop have been applied across diverse domains, including smart environmental management, energy informatics, digital healthcare, smart cities, and intelligent transportation.
I received my PhD in Information Engineering from the University of Cambridge and hold a BEng (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Over the years, I have built a track record in academic leadership and in managing international ICT projects supported by agencies in Europe, Asia and Australia. Individually and through collaborative consortia, I have secured more than AU$50 million in research funding. My work has been recognised with a number of national and international awards, including the British Council Trilateral Research Award, the UK DCMS 5G Trial Grant, the Samsung Global Research Outreach Award, the EPSRC Global Challenges Grant, the IEEE–EURASIP Best Paper Award, the ERCIM Alain Bensoussan Fellowship, the Cambridge PhD Research Scholarship, and the NTU President’s Research Scholarship.
I have co‑authored more than 90 high‑impact journal, conference papers and book chapters, and have contributed to the global research community as a Program Chair, Session Chair, and Technical Program Committee member for leading international conferences. I am a Senior Advisor of Monash Energy Institute, a Senior Member of the IEEE, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK), and an affiliate member of the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI), Cambridge. Previously, I was part of the founding leadership team of the Cyber‑Physical Systems Research Group at Birmingham City University, UK, where I served as Head of the Future Information Networks (FINET) Research Cluster.
