Biography
Stephen Lindsay is a Senior Lecturer in Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) in the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University and Action Lab. Stephen’s work empowers healthcare service users and professionals to understand, shape, and control the socio‑technical systems around them through Participatory Design, action research, and hands‑on making. His research develops novel design methods and technologies that support inclusion, agency, and equity in healthcare and community contexts.
Stephen has worked on interdisciplinary research projects with healthcare providers, charities, and public sector organisations, including UK NHS Health Boards, The Alzheimer’s Society, Wallara and a wide range of community and rehabilitation services, as well as international academic partners and NGOs including the Red Cross. His collaborations span digital health, assistive technology, mental health peer support, and inclusive making, and include sustained partnerships with neurodivergent communities, people living with dementia, Parkinson’s disease, brain injury, cerebral palsy, and people with low literacy in rural settings. He has conducted long‑term fieldwork and collaborative design research in the UK, Australia, Pakistan, and across Europe.
Across HCI, health, and social care research communities, Stephen’s work has achieved significant national and international impact. His research on participatory design with older adults and people living with dementia is widely cited and has contributed to shifts in both methodological practice and ethical thinking in design research. This work has been recognised with a CHI Best Paper Award, and Stephen publishes extensively at leading HCI conferences as well as in established medical and social care journals, including International Psychogeriatrics and Ageing & Society.
