Biography

Dr Steph Garratt (BA(Hons), MPH(Hons), PhD) is a Health Sociologist and Ethicist. Her research interests include: care of older adults, medication quality and safety, relational ethics, principlism, dementia care, and consumer input into care. She specialises in mixed-methods research, qualitative methodologies, and empirical ethics.  

Dr Garratt has over a decade of experience working with older adults and healthcare professionals across various care settings in Australia and New Zealand. She completed her Doctorate in Health Sciences with the University of Auckland (New Zealand) in 2022, focusing on medication omissions and clinical decision-making in New Zealand residential aged care homes.  She continues to hold a casual academic role with the University of Auckland, guest lecturing and contributing to assessment across the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences in relation to ethics in practice. 

Currently, Dr Garratt is leading a series of pilot projects related to medication administration in residential aged care/aged care facilities in Australia, through a 2023 Hal Kendig Research Development Program Grant (Australian Association of Gerontology), and 2023 Future Research Leader Grant from the School of Nursing and Midwifery (Monash University). She is open to collaborations and associate supervision opportunities focussed around care of older adults and/or healthcare ethics.

Aged care, Gerontology, Bioethics, Clinical Decision-Making, Qualitative research, Mixed-Methods research, Sub-acute care, and Medication management.
