Biography
Stavros works in the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University as an Australian Research Council Future Fellow. He heads the Oxidant and Inflammation Biology Group.
Dr Stavros Selemidis obtained his Ph.D. in 2001 in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Melbourne, working in the area of endothelium and regulation of coronary artery tone. In 2003 he was awarded an NHMRC Peter Doherty Research Fellowship to conduct postdoctoral studies at the Howard Florey Institute where he examined mechanisms of oxidative stress and cytoprotection in the vasculature. In 2005 he moved to the Department of Pharmacology, Monash University and in 2012, Dr Selemidis was awarded an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship and he now heads the Oxidant and Inflammation Biology Group.
He has served on numerous occasions on a Training Fellowship Review Panel for the NHMRC, and has held Cancer Council of Victoria and National Heart Foundation grants. He has over 35 publications including Nature Reviews Drug Discovery and over 20 invitations to speak at both National and International conferences, and research institutions.
Stavros' research is currently focused on investigating the roles of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in biological processes that underpin influenza A virus induced lung injury and cancer. His research programs provide a logical and unifying approach that will lead to the identification of cellular pathways influenced by ROS relevant to diseases caused by influenza A virus infections and cancer, the generation of novel and more selective tools to understand such processes, and the validation of these processes in appropriate cell and animal models. His recent research has made novel observations that relate specifically to the important family of enzymes now known to be the master regulators of ROS production in mammalian cells - the NADPH oxidases.
