Research interests

My primary research interests encompass applied natural language processing (NLP) and data management. My research focuses on the analysis of domain-specific data and user-generated content within social media platforms.

I have a track record of successfully leading significant research endeavors, including two projects funded by the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) under the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) Malaysia in 2014 and 2017 (both with 10% application success rate nationwide). These projects delved into the intricate nuances of aspect-based sentiment analysis and cyberbullying detection respectively.  At present, I am leading a FRGS-funded project, which was approved in 2022.  The research project centers on advanced techniques for relation extraction from conversational texts.   Besides, I am also part of a dedicated team investigating misinformation on social media, with support from FRGS. Our collective efforts aim to combat the spread of misinformation and foster a more informed and responsible online community.

Additionally, I've actively contributed to industry-funded research initiatives, collaborating with prominent entities such as Telekom Malaysia to develop sentiment analysis solutions, and Intel on knowledge graph generation for enhancing customer support systems.  Starting in 2021, my research portfolio expanded into the realm of digital health. I'm currently engaged in two noteworthy projects: one involves the creation of an emotion-aware mental health intervention chatbot with cultural adaptation while the other focuses on emotion detection using video-based data. These projects are pivotal in leveraging technology for mental health well-being.  Furthermore, I am proud to be part of a collaborative venture with the Action Lab at Monash University Australia and the South East Asia Community Observatory (SEACO), aimed at addressing open data access on public health surveillance data.
