Simon Troon is a Lecturer in Film, Screen and Culture in the School of Media, Film and Journalism and also holds a volunteer role as Programming Chair of Environmental Films Australia.

Cinematic Encounters with Disaster: Realisms for the Anthropocene, Simon's first book, was published in Bloomsbury Academic's 'Thinking Cinema' series in 2024. It investigates ethical possibilities for disaster cinema from Hollywood and beyond. His research and writing on cinema, media and the environment has also been published in journals including Continuum Journal of Media & Cultural Studies, Media International Australia, Studies in Documentary Film and elsewhere. 

Simon is registered for associate supervision and interested in supervising MA and PhD research, particularly on topics related to:

• Ecocinema theory and practice
• Politics and aesthetics of documentary
• Moving image industries and cultures of Australia, Aotearoa and the South Pacific
• Gender and the environment

In 2026 Simon is coordinating ATS3540 - Documentary screens in semester one and  ATS3299 - Screen and the body in semester two, as well as teaching into the following units:

• APG5458 - Digital technology, policy and governance
• ATS1304 - Introduction to television studies
