Simon Bell is Professor and Director, Centre for Medicine Use and Safety, Monash University. He is also Adjunct Professor of Geriatric Pharmacotherapy, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Eastern Finland. Prior to taking up his present appointment, he was Associate Professor, Sansom Institute, University of South Australia and Research Director, Kuopio Research Centre of Geriatric Care, University of Eastern Finland.
Professor Bell's research interests primarily relate to medicines use among older people, particularly psychotropic and analgesic medicines. He has published more than 340 articles in scientific journals and been an investigator on over $45 million of research grants. He was a chief investigator of the NHMRC Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre and the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Frailty and Healthy Ageing. He is Clinical Chair of Australia’s new Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Appropriate Use of Psychotropic Medications in People Living with Dementia and in Residential Aged Care.
Professor Bell is Associate Editor of the Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research and an Editorial Board Member for Therapeutic Advances in Drug Safety.
He has been supervisor/associate supervisor of 16 completed PhD theses in Australia, Finland and Estonia; and given presentations about pharmacy-related topics in more than 30 countries worldwide.
He has been the recipient of a number of awards including the American Medical Director’s Association JAMDA Morley Award (2022), Monash University Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Award for Research Engagement and Impact (2022), Elsevier Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy Impact Award (2015), ASCEPT Denis Wade Johnson & Johnson New Investigator Award (2014) and Alzheimer’s Australia Resthaven Dementia Research Award (2013).
Professor Bell was one of two Monash University appointees to the Committee for Melbourne’s Future Focus Group 2017-2018, a program to promote the City’s pillars of future economy, liveability, infrastructure and urban optimisation. Through this program, Professor Bell led an initiative in collaboration with Dementia Australia to encourage business and civic organisations across Melbourne to become dementia-friendly. He was a NHMRC Dementia Leadership Fellow from 2017-2022.
Professor Bell was President of the International Pharmaceutical Students Federation (IPSF), an organisation of over 300,000 pharmacy student and young pharmacist members from more than 70 countries, in 2003-2004. He was Australian Young Pharmacist of the Year in 2004. Professor Bell is a former Chair of the New South Wales Young Pharmacists Group, and a former National Councillor (Alternate) of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia.
