Research interests

Shaun is a Research Fellow working with Prof Kristian Helmerson, within the ARC Centre of Excellence in Future Low-Energy Electronics Technologies (FLEET). Shaun is currently working on using ultracold atoms to study dissipation and equilibration in driven Floquet systems, and the creation of topological states.

Shaun is also interested in 2D turbulence. As noted by Lars Onsager, chaotic flows tend to develop order. Smaller vortices preferentially group with others of the same sign of circulation, developing large-scale features. When ultracold atoms reach a state of matter known as a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), flow in the gas becomes quantised, that is, vortices are only allowed to take quantised units of circulation. Shaun has performed experiments in these quantised flows, generating a system exhibiting 2D "quantum turbulence." From an initially disordered flow, a dynamic increase in the degree of clustering of vortices of the same sign was observed, resembling Onsager's description of 2D turbulence.

Shaun is also a developer of the labscript suite, an open source control and analysis system for (in particular ultracold atom) experimental aparatus. This Python-based software suite was developed for the Monash BEC labs, and is now in use by many groups around the world.
