Personal profile
Biography
Dr. Shamshad Karatela is an environmental epidemiologist whose research focuses on climate-sensitive occupational and environmental exposures and their impacts on chronic disease. She is now a Research Fellow at Monash University. Her work investigates and examines how complex exposure mixtures, including airborne pollutants and emerging environmental contaminants, influence health in occupation health and environment health in exposed populations.
Her research integrates environmental epidemiology, biomonitoring, biostatitics and exposure science, with particular interests in firefighters, mining-related occupational settings, pregnancy cohorts, and populations disproportionately affected by environmental change and industrial exposures. She has experience in large cohort studies, biomonitoring datasets, linked administrative health data, and specialised in population-based epidemiological methods.
Dr. Karatela’s work also focuses on translating environmental and occupational health research into prevention strategies, public health policy, and workforce preparedness initiatives. She is involved in teaching and interdisciplinary workforce development initiatives aimed at strengthening capacity in environmental health, epidemiology, research methods, and climate and health education.
