Biography
Dr Sean Atkinson a senior lecturer and the clinical skills coordinator for the graduate-entry Year A MD program at Monash Rural Heath in Churchill. Dr Atkinson and his team aim to ensure students leave into the clinical years with a well-rounded and strong foundation in teamwork, communication skills/empathy training, history-taking, systems-based examination skills, and essential procedural skills.
In addition to his teaching role, Dr Atkinson serves on numerous committees within the medical course to assist in the development of the MD program. He is an active researcher in mental health and student support programs. He is a student support advocate and works to help reduce the difficulties faced by high achieving students in a high pressure environment such as medical school.
Dr Atkinson obtained both a Bachelor of Science (BSc) and a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Monash University. He holds a Fellowship from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and continues to work as a General Practitioner with a special interest in mental health within Gippsland. He is also a member of the Australian Society for Psychological Medicine.
In 2020 Dr Atkinson received the Deputy Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence.
In 2022 Dr Atkinson as part of the Year A clinical skills team was awarded the Dean's Award for Excellence: Innovation in Learning and Teaching team award.
Clinical activities
Dr Atkinson works in Warragul in West Gippsland as a General Practitioner who focusses on adult mental health care through provision of psychotherapy.
