Personal profile

Biography

I am a global health academic and advocate/activist. With a multidisciplinary training in sociology, medicine and a PhD in epidemiology, my work sits at the interface of research and advocacy for social policy and health policy in pursuit of social justice and fairness.

I have worked in a variety of research-focused organisations including icddr,b (Bangladesh), Population Council (India), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and most recently at University College London where I was Professor of Global Public Health and taught classes in Power and Politics in Global Health. For more than 30 years I have worked with and within national Governments (predominantly in South and East Asia), UN agencies and civil society organisations promoting the use of evidence to support globally shared goals of gender equality, health equity and social justice.

I am co-Chair of the Lancet Commission on Gender and Global Health, a UK-Government-appointed Commissioner for the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (https://cscuk.fcdo.gov.uk/about-us/ ), and alongside Professor Kent Buse am co-founder and co-CEO of GH5050 (Global Health 50/50 - https://globalhealth5050.org/) which advances action and accountability for gender equality.
