Biography

Sandra Nolte is Director of the newly established Person-Centred Research Directorate at Eastern Health Clinical School in Box Hill. She specialises in the development, translation, cultural adaption and validation of person-/patient-centred outcomes (PCO) instruments across disease areas, with special emphasis in oncology.

Following her PhD and postdoctoral studies in Australia, Sandra’s professional research career began in skin cancer prevention working for a non-profit group in Germany where she was part of the core research team implementing the German federal skin cancer screening program. She then moved to Charite University Medicine Berlin, one of Europe’s largest medical teaching hospitals where she was founding director of the Charite Health Outcomes Research Unit. After six years at Charite, she moved into research consulting and became PCO Director at ICON Clinical Research plc where she managed multidisciplinary teams and oversaw various PCO projects for clients of the pharmaceutical industry. In late 2021, Sandra returned to Charite as senior advisor before relocating to Australia with her family in 2023.

With 20 years of PCO research experience, Sandra has a deep understanding of the needs of different stakeholders in PCO research, clinical practice and industry. Over the last several years, she has developed a large global PCO network, with close relationships with some of the most prominent institutions in PCO research, i.e., ISOQOL, EORTC, PROMIS and ICHOM. She is a former member of the ISOQOL Board of Directors, former member of the EORTC Quality of Life Group Executive Committee and former co-chair of PROMIS International.

Sandra holds a BA (Honours) in Business Management and a PhD in Human Services Research. The focus of her PhD was the exploration of biases in the measurement of change based on self-reported health. In 2022, she was awarded her Venia Legendi (Habilitation) by Charite. The focus of her Habilitation was the standardisation of PCO measurement. Sandra has published extensively, with >100 peer-reviewed publications and >150 conference abstracts.
