Biography

Dr. Sandeep Gopal is a Research Fellow affiliated with the Development and Stem Cells Program at the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute and the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology.

Sandeep started his career as an engineer in India, before becoming fascinated in biomedical research, specifically biochemistry and cell/molecular biology. Sandeep completed his masters degree from the University of Skovde, Sweden in Molecular Biology and joined the University of Copenhagen, Denmark for his master research project. He continued at University of Copenhagen for his doctorate under renowned proteoglycan researcher Professor John Couchman, which he completed in 2012. During his PhD studies, Sandeep identified the overriding function of proteoglycans in cytosolic calcium regulation. This widely recognized finding was identified as the single most important aspect of proteoglycan biology and resulted in multiple invited reviews and conference talks.

After completing his Ph.D., Sandeep joined Institute of Biology Valrose (iBV), a leading research centre in France, as Postdoctoral Researcher where he studied the role of the extracellular matrix, proteoglycans and integrins in head and neck cancer. After his first postdoc, Sandeep returned to the University of Copenhagen to continue his studies on proteoglycans and its relevance in disease models. In 2015, Sandeep was recruited to Monash University to join the lab of Associate Professor Roger Pocock, to study the role of proteoglycans in stem cell development. While his primary interest is stem cells, Sandeep takes part in other projects in the lab to decode conserved mechanisms during neuronal development.

Sandeep has a wide range of expertise in working with mammalian and Caenorhabditis elegans models and he has published in several well-cited articles in reputable journals including Nature Communications, Journal of Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Matrix Biology and Journal of Biochemistry.
