He is currently a Professor at the School of Information Technology Monash University Malaysia. He obtained both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from South Dakota State University, U.S.A in 1984 and 1985 respectively. He then worked briefly as a System Designer at Daktronics, South Dakota, before joining as a lecturer at the department of electrical engineering, University of Malaya (UM) in 1986. In 1992, he obtained a Ph.D fellowship from Japan and was awarded Doctor of Engineering for his research in image processing and neural network from University of Tokushima, Japan in 1994.

He became Professor in 2003 and achieved the highest grade for Professor in 2014. He retired from UM in 2018 and later was employed as an honorary Professor at the department of electrical engineering till 2024. He was also employed as a Professor at the Institute of Computer Science and Digital Innovation, UCSI University from 2019-2021.

His research and teaching interests have been in the areas of Image and Video Analysis, Analysis and Applications of EEG signals, machine learning algorithms and Soft Computing. He has regularly published in top-tier journals, presented at highly ranked conferences, and collaborated with international scientists to advance research ideas. His pioneering works using Krawtchouk and Hahn moments for image analysis, development of invariant properties of orthogonal moments and an application using EEG signals for communication have been highly cited.

He has guided 21 Ph.D students to completion and some of them hold academic and research positions in USA, Europe, Singapore, and Malaysia. His successful collaborative research on developing a novel based technique to predict blood glucose levels using the data from a noninvasive method with an international company produced a patent in Singapore. In 2007, he was named the most prolific publisher for a 5-year period from 2002-2007.

He co-authored/authored two undergraduate textbooks published by Springer-Verlag in 1997 and Pearson in 2002. He and his colleague developed the successful biomedical engineering program at University of Malaya in 1997. He has provided consulting services in the form of teaching courses, evaluator and consultant to government bodies and multinational companies.

In 1999, the Royal Highness Sultan of Perak awarded him the Paduka Mahkota Perak (PMP) for his services to his state as a former badminton state player (1977-1978) and academic contributions to the nation. He was a member of the national badminton coaching panel from 2000-2002. He is a member of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) disciplinary board from 2017- 2024 where he provides video analysis.
