Philip Withers has a joint appointment between the Universities of Monash and Manchester, UK. He is the first Regius Professor of Materials at Manchester University and as Chief Scientist (2016-2024) helped establish the Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials and the Defence Centre of Excellence in Materials (DMEx) bringing together 25 catapults, universities and research organisations. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, Academia Europea and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Indian National Science Academy.  His research focusses on imaging, modelling and understanding the behaviour of materials in real time and 3D often in situ under demanding environments. To this end he has pioneered the use of synchrotron and lab. X-ray CT to and combined this with information from electron and neutron beams to shine a light on their behaviour. In 2008 he set up the Henry Moseley X-ray Imaging Facility.  This was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2014 for innovation, imp[act and excellence. He is a graduate of Cambridge University where he studied Physics (1985) before a PhD in Materials Science (1989). In 1990 he was appointed Asssitant Lectuer at Cambridge before taking up his Chair in Manchester in 1998.
