Biography

Associate Professor Paul Leong (MBBS, MPHTM, CCPU, FRACP, PhD) is a Respiratory, Sleep, and General Physician at Monash Health, where he co-leads the Airways Diseases service. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at Monash University and a Fellow of the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in Treatable Traits.

He has an established track record in translating respiratory and health technology innovations into clinical practice, with achievements including a granted US patent and multiple citations in international guidelines.

His research interests span airways disease, complex dyspnoea, including inducible laryngeal obstruction/vocal cord dysfunction, and novel imaging approaches such as ultrasound and dynamic computed tomography. His work has advanced the understanding of laryngeal dysfunction and the cardiovascular manifestations of COPD and significantly influenced clinical approaches.

Associate Professor Leong is a founding member of the Global Initiative for Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO), a new peak international body for respiratory laryngeal disorders. He co-developed the ILO/VCD toolkit, the first comprehensive, globally accessible online resource in this field, and recently led the first international consensus definition of ILO/VCD.

His clinical and academic career has included work across metropolitan, rural, and remote Australia, as well as experience in Asia, Africa, and the USA. He is a frequent invited speaker at national and international conferences.
