Biography

Pam has a wide range of experience in science education and teacher education research. Her research in science education has focused on practices that promote student understanding in, and about, science (and physics); the role of assessment and laboratory work in science (and physics) education; and more recently, understanding how the science curriculum might better represent the social contexts in which many contemporary scientists work. Her teacher education research has concentrated on understanding teacher learning through the lenses of teachers’ beliefs and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK); with colleagues at Monash, she developed tools for exploring and representing science teachers' PCK that are now used by educators and researchers both locally and internationally.

Pam has worked as a secondary teacher of physics, general science and mathematics, and as a lecturer in science education. She co-developed the Conceptual Understanding Procedure (CUP), a teaching procedure for promoting student understanding in physics and science, and maintains a website that provides teachers with detailed examples (http://monash.edu/science-education/2015/resources/conceptual-understanding-procedure/).
