Personal profile

Biography

Assoc. Prof. Ooi Chien Wei specializes in the fields of bioprocess design and biocatalysis. His research focus is on the development of integrated microbial fermentation systems and bioprocess model prediction tools for the expression of industrially important enzymes and proteins derived from recombinant DNA technology. His research also involves the applications of bio-derived ionic liquids and stimuli-responsive polymers in the designs of novel bioprocesses, bioseparation systems and biosensing materials. Aside from the field of bioprocess engineering, his research focuses on the development of food-grade emulsion systems and the extraction technologies applied in food waste valorization and recovery of phytonutrients from microalgal source and agrowastes. He has been working with the industrial partners in the development of smart hydrogels for glove application and in the transformation of chemical synthesis routes by biocatalysis strategy, ranging from enzyme engineering to molecular dynamic simulations. He has published more than 90 ISI-indexed journals, and holds 6 patents related to bioprocess technology, biomass processing and smart hydrogel application. He has secured multiple research grants from government and industry worth more than RM680,000 as principle investigator.
