Biography
Dr Ong Huey Fang is a Senior Lecturer and Course Coordinator at the School of Information Technology, Monash University Malaysia. She contributes to teaching, curriculum development, student supervision, and academic leadership in the areas of data science and artificial intelligence. She received her bachelor’s degree from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and both her master’s and doctoral degrees from Universiti Putra Malaysia, specialising in Intelligent Computing. Prior to joining Monash University Malaysia, she held academic and leadership roles at private higher education institutions and gained industry experience with the software testing group at the Board Design Center Malaysia, Intel Product Malaysia. She has extensive experience in teaching and research and has led and contributed to funded projects in artificial intelligence, data science, and biomedical informatics, with publications in international journals and conferences. Dr Ong is an active member of the professional community. She serves as Honorary Secretary of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Malaysia Chapter and is a Professional Member of IEEE and ACM, as well as a Professional Technologist registered with the Malaysia Board of Technologists. Her work reflects a commitment to advancing AI-driven solutions with real-world and societal impact.
Research interests
Dr Ong’s research is centred on artificial intelligence, machine learning, data mining, and bioinformatics, with a focus on developing integrative, interpretable, and data-driven computational approaches for complex biomedical and real-world problems. Her primary research area is biomarker discovery through multi-omics data analytics, including gene expression and heterogeneous biological datasets. She develops intelligent models and associative learning frameworks to identify predictive gene markers and support early disease detection, precision medicine, and translational healthcare applications. Dr Ong has also worked in other areas of computer science research, including natural language processing, speech and gesture recognition, immersive technologies, software engineering, health and medical informatics, and interdisciplinary intelligent systems.
