Personal profile

Biography

Mujie Li is a researcher of digital media and culture and an experimental writer. Her research explores how literary aspects, such as writing, reading, text, and language in digital and computational technological conditions shape digital aesthetics. Situated at the intersection of media studies, literary practice, and digital humanities, her work engages with questions of materiality, technics, and the transforming conditions of writing in digital media and culture, with a particular focus on foregrounding decolonial perspectives on technology and digital culture.

Drawing on traditions of critical theory that attend to language, power, and mediation, Li brings these frameworks into direct contact with hands-on creative experimentation. She employs creative methodologies, including AI-assisted co-writing, cultural data cartography, and media-based literary experiments, to generate critical reflection on how technologies transform knowledge and cultural experience, positioning literature as a site of inquiry into broader questions of media and aesthetics.

Li's monograph Digital Writing: Materializing Writing in Media Arts and Technocultures is forthcoming from Bloomsbury in September 2026. She is also the author of the novella Mirage Time (Dostoyevsky Wannabe, 2017).

Her writing and research appear across international platforms including Electronic Book Review, O-Square, and The Paper. Her creative work has been exhibited at Ed Video Media Arts Centre (Canada) and the Beijing International Book Fair (China).

Li’s research is supported by a 2026 Monash University Malaysia Strength Grant for Literary AI: Computational Writing and the Media of Language and a 2025 SEED Grant for A Writing Cartography of Central Malacca. She has peer reviewed for journals in Europe and the UK across media technology, art, and digital humanities.
