Biography
Dr. Michelle Shannon is a Research Fellow within the Rehabilitation, Ageing and Independent Living (RAIL) Research Centre, where she is the project manager for the innovative ‘Smart Ward-PREDICT’ project.
Dr Shannon is a researcher with a strong interest in examining how technology and interior architectural design interact with human behaviour. She aims to harness these insights to optimize physical, social, and health outcomes, for hospitalized older adults and people with neurological disorders.
Her key areas of expertise include:
- Stroke Recovery: Investigating post-stroke sequelae and rehabilitation outcomes, such as falls.
- Health Architecture: Exploring how hospital ward design and interiors affect patient recovery (the focus of her PhD, which connected neuroscience with architecture).
- Older Adult Care: Implementing and evaluating older adult healthcare programs.
Dr Shannon has worked as an experienced neurological physiotherapist in acute and rehabilitation settings across Australia, Ireland, the UK, and the Middle East. This hands-on experience keeps her research practical and focused on real-world patient needs.
