Biography

Dr Md Jahangir Alam is a Research Fellow at the Therapeutic Antibodies for Inflammation Lab within the Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) at Monash University. His research goal is to make a significant bridge between academic and translational medicine in the form of new therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, inflammatory disorders, and cancer. He specifically focuses on developing new therapeutic mAbs that target G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) associated with such pathologies and testing the therapeutic efficacy of these potential therapies across various preclinical models using human receptor knock-in (KI) mice. His lab is one of the few academic teams capable of competing with the industry in anti-GPCR mAb drug development.

Dr Alam obtained his PhD in Immunology from Monash University in August 2023, under the supervision of Professor Charles Mackay and Associate Professor Remy Robert. In his PhD, he excelled in the generation and characterisation of human receptor KI mice and investigated the therapeutic potential of anti-human mAbs to address autoimmune inflammation in preclinical models using these KI mice. His doctoral research also introduced a transformative therapeutic approach to tackle autoimmune inflammation, combining mAbs therapies targeting key pathogenic immune cells with short-chain fatty acid-based dietary interventions to modulate gut microbiota, effectively restoring immune tolerance in preclinical models.

Before pursuing his PhD, Dr Alam completed a Bachelor of Science (Hons) and a Master of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
