Biography
Matt's research interests are sports law, employment law, Japanese law and regulatory theory. He teaches in undergraduate and postgraduate law units: employment law, banking/finance law and sports law and policy.
Matt completed his PhD in 2017 at the Adelaide Law School, University of Adelaide. His thesis examined the regulation of labour and labour mobility in professional baseball in the United States (Major League Baseball), Japan (Nippon Professional Baseball) and Australia (Australian Baseball League).
Edward Elgar published Matt’s book in 2019. It is titled ‘Globalisation, Sports Law and Labour Mobility: the Case of Professional Baseball in the United States and Australia’. His other sports law publications include articles on the movement of players from Japan to the United States, The labour regulation of Major League Baseball, wages in Minor League Baseball, the undue commodification of labour in professional baseball and Australian football and free agency in baseball and Australian.
Matt has a long involvement in Melbourne baseball as a player, coach and administrator. Since 2010 Matt has volunteered in baseball operations at the Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League. He is currently a board member of the Melbourne Winter Baseball League and was a junior coach for a number of years for teams at local clubs and teams competing in state, national and international tournaments.
