Biography

Mark Tan Kiak Min is currently Associate Professor (Medical Ethics) at the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia. Prior to joining Monash University Malaysia, Mark was a member of the Medical Ethics & Law Department of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), and Founding Chair of the Clinical Ethics Committee of Hospital Al-Sultan Abdullah UiTM.

He received a BMedSc(Hons) degree for research in medical education, and his MBBChBAO undergraduate medical degree from the National University of Ireland. He subsequently completed the MA(Bioethics and Medical Law) at St. Mary's University, Twickenham, London, with a dissertation on Advocating for Legislations on Advance Decisions in Malaysia. He then obtained his Doctorate in Bioethics (DBe) from Loyola University Chicago, pusuing a dual concentration in Clinical Ethics and Public Health & Systems Ethics.

Mark is a Clinical Ethicist and Healthcare Ethics Consultant, having successfully obtained the Healthcare Ethics Consultant-Certified (HEC-C) certification from the HCEC Certification Commission in the USA in 2021. Being a pioneer in clinical ethics in Malaysia, he co-founded the Malaysian Bioethics Community (MBC) and Clinical Ethics Malaysia (CEM) in 2020. He has also been instrumental in setting up Hospital Ethics Committees and Clinical Ethics Committees at numerous hospitals, and is actively involved in capacity building efforts in Malaysia. He has also received accreditation as a Mediator by the Malaysian International Mediation Centre.

Mark is currently involved in many national and international level initiatives, including being a member of the National Bioethics Council of Malaysia, and the WHO Expert Working Group on Developing Clinical Ethics Guidelines. He is also on the Editorial Board of the Asian Bioethics Review, and the New Bioethics journals.

Mark's areas of research include developing Clinical Ethics Committees, Clinical Ethics, with particular interest in end-of-life ethics, medical decision-making, advance decision-making, mental capacity and consent. Mark also works in ares related to the intersection of medical ethics and law, medical professionalism, ethics education, transplant ethics, environmental ethics and professional ethics. 

Being a strong advocate of mentoring, Mark is open to engaging with students who may have an interest in bioethics and medical law, and is available to suprvise PhD students in these areas of study.
