Personal profile

Biography

I am an Australian anaesthesia Senior Registrar, the Head of Research (Cardiac Anaesthesia) at the Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH), and the Scientific Director of the Victorian Cardiac Anaesthesia Research Laboratory (ViCARL) based at Monash University. I am a 2025 NHMRC and Heart Foundation Postgraduate Scholar currently undertaking a PhD in pulmonary artery catheters under the supervision of Prof Rinaldo Bellomo. In these roles, I directly oversee the research activities of 12 research students and fellows along with 27 clinical staff. ViCARL is a multidisciplinary, vertically integrated lab comprised of ECMRs, and is a world-leader in conducting innovative peri-operative cardiovascular trials across themes in haemodynamic monitoring (PUMA), cardiac anaesthesia transfusion outcomes (CATO), and computer vision-guided perioperative pulmonary protection (GESTALT).

As an early-career researcher and PhD student, I have spent time abroad in research positions at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester) and the University of Edinburgh. I now lead large international collaborations with colleagues from MIT, Mayo Clinic, and Cornell. I have published 72 articles in relevant journals including Br J AnaesthAnaesthesia, and Lancet Neur. My work has been cited > 1,200 times and has translated into numerous policy impacts, with particular emphasis on outcomes research in cardiac surgery.

I have obtained $340K in CIA funding from the Heart Foundation and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. I co-founded the Cardiac Anaesthesia Research Accelerator (CARA), an international student scholarship program that has reached >20,000 medical students, provided 35 scholarships, translated into 32 publications with student first authors, and now attracts > A$100,000 in annual funding.
My career objective is to build collaborative research potential at VHH and pursue additional subspecialty training in adult cardiac anesthesiology in the United States in 2027 and develop enduring international research collaborations.
