Personal profile

Biography

Associate Professor Liton Kamruzzaman is an ARC Future Fellow and the recipient of an ARC Mid-Career Industry Fellowship. He is internationally recognised for his research on integrated transport and land-use planning, with a particular focus on place-based approaches to sustainable mobility, urban form, and transport decarbonisation. His work has advanced influential theoretical frameworks, including the theory of sustainable city size and the concept of mobility-oriented development (MOD), which are reshaping how governments evaluate urban growth, accessibility, and emissions-reduction strategies.

He is recognised as a Top Researcher in Urban Studies and Planning in Australia and is among the most impactful scholars globally in transport and land-use research. His research has informed national and international policy debates, including the IPCC’s endorsement of integrated transport and land-use planning. He serves on the editorial boards of leading international journals, including the Journal of Transport Geography, the Journal of Transport and Land Use, and the Journal of Cycling and Micromobility Research. He leads externally funded research programs in close collaboration with government and industry, including long-standing partnerships with the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning.

Research interests

His research examines the bidirectional relationship between transport systems and urban form, and how planning and major transport interventions shape travel behaviour, accessibility, and sustainability outcomes to inform place-based transport and urban policy. His research interests span three interrelated areas:

  • Integrated transport and land-use planning, including the role of urban and neighbourhood planning in promoting sustainable travel behaviour, reducing transport emissions, and improving accessibility and liveability;
  • Future pathways for transport and cities, including mobility-oriented development (MOD), transit-oriented development (TOD), the role of high-speed rail in shaping sustainable city size, and place-based approaches to net-zero transport; and
  • Spatial and data-driven analytics for transport and urban planning, including the use of GIS, big and administrative data, and advanced modelling techniques to support evidence-based policy and decision-making.

Supervision interests

Liton has supervised PhD, Masters, Honours, and postdoctoral researchers across engineering, planning, information technology, science, and design, and has a strong track record of supporting industry-linked and policy-focused doctoral research.

He welcomes PhD students interested in undertaking analytically rigorous and policy-relevant research within his areas of research interest, particularly projects that engage with real-world planning and transport challenges and involve collaboration with government or industry partners.

Monash teaching commitment

Liton's teaching is grounded in research-led and practice-oriented learning, integrating transport and urban planning theory with real-world policy and industry contexts. He has contributed to curriculum innovation and postgraduate program development at Monash University, with a strong focus on building students’ analytical, spatial, and critical thinking capabilities.
