Biography
Dr Liton Kamruzzaman is an Associate Professor of Transport in the Department of Civil Engineering. Liton is ranked as the TOP RESEARCHER in Urban Studies and Planning in Australia consecutively in 2021 and 2023. He is also recognised as the top 3 most impactful researcher globally in transport and land use planning. He serves in the International Editorial Board of the Journal of Transport Geography Journal of Transport and Land Use and Journal of Cycling and Micromobility Research. Liton is the Deputy Direcotr of Education (Education Support) and serves in the Civil Research Committee in the Department of Civil Engineering at Monash University.
Liton has a vast experience of teaching transport and land use planning, GIS, and Remote Sensing. He has supervised 12 PhD students to completion. Prior to joining Monash Institute of Transport Studies, Liton has taught at Monash Urban Planning and Design, Queensland University of Technology, Australia; University of Ulster, UK; and Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh.
Research interests
Liton has established a well-funded program of published research that identifies cross-sectional and longitudinal evidence base on the bidirectional relationship between transportation and urban planning. His areas of expertise include land use planning, travel behaviour, transport emissions modelling, econometrics, transport planning, GIS and Remote Sensing (RS). These skillsets together with his multidisciplinary academic background (PhD in Transportation, MSc in Geoinformation Science, and bachelor degree in Urban Planning) enable him to conduct cross-disciplinary research, with a greater focus on the application of spatial/data science techniques in transportation and urban planning. His current research activities can broadly be categorised in the following three areas:
- The role of urban planning to promote sustainable travel behaviour;
- Envisioning the future of transportation and cities; and
- Computer vision and big data analytics for transportation/urban planning.
Expertise related to UN Sustainable Development Goals
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
